Special Stitch Instructions
- Corner Cluster: (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in the same space
- Side Cluster: 3 dc in the space
- All side clusters and corner clusters are separated by chain spaces for growth and shaping.
The Pattern
Center and First Round
- Make a magic ring (or ch 4, sl st to form a ring).
- Into the ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2,
- (3 dc, ch 2), repeat from * two more times (you will have 4 groups of 3 dc, each separated by ch 2).
- Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 to close round.
- Pull tail to close the ring neatly.
At this point, you should see four groups of double crochets forming the first four sides of your square. The chain spaces will be your corners.
Second Round
- Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the next ch-2 corner space.
- Ch 2 for the corner, 3 dc in the same corner space.
- In the next ch-2 corner sp: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Repeat for the next two corners.
- Finish round with sl st into the top of starting ch-3.
You now have a bigger square with double clusters in each corner. The pattern "grows" from here, with clusters in every ch-2 corner.
Third Round
- Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the next space between clusters (side space).
- In each corner ch-2 sp: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
- In each side space: 3 dc.
- Continue working 3 dc in every side space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in every corner.
- Sl st to join.
With each new round, your square grows by adding clusters along the sides, and corners are always made in the ch-2 spaces. This keeps your square flat and even!
More Rounds
Repeat the Third Round until your granny square is the desired size.
For every round:
- Work 3 dc in each side space,
- Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner.
Continue this method for as many rounds as you like. If you'd like to change colors, do so at the end of any round by fastening off and joining the new yarn in any corner space.
Assembly & Finishing
- When your square is finished, sl st to join and fasten off.
- Weave in all ends neatly with a yarn needle.
- Use your granny square alone as a coaster, or make multiple and join together for blankets, bags, scarves, or whatever you like!
This simple method produces a versatile square with neat corners and sides. You can customize your square by changing colors, adding more rounds, or joining to other squares for bigger projects!
