Instructions
Base of Card Holder
- Foundation:
- Make a slip knot.
- Ch 15.
- Row 1 (Foundation Row):
- With hook, dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across up to the last ch. (You will have 13 dc.)
- In the very last ch: work 3 dc into the same ch (for the corner).
- Rotate your work to work along the bottom of the foundation chain.
- Dc in next 12 unused loops of the base chain (other side), ending at the opposite end.
- In the last (corner) st, work 3 dc (creating the second corner).
- Join with sl st to first dc. (Total: 30 dc around - 13 along one side, 3 in corner, 12 along other side, 3 in other corner)
Body of Card Holder
- Row 2:
- Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same st at the corner (=3 dc in one st: this forms a cluster).
- Ch 1. Skip 2 sts, in the next st, 3 dc.
- Rep: [Ch 1, skip 2 sts, 3 dc in next st] across, always creating a 3-dc cluster in each group.
- Continue the pattern until end of round.
- Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.
- Row 3 - Row 7 (or until desired height):
- Sl st into the next two dc to reach the ch-1 sp (the center of a cluster).
- Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same sp.
- Ch 1, in next ch-1 sp, 3 dc.
- Rep around, always working 3 dc in each ch-1 sp, separated by ch-1.
- At the end of each round, sl st to top of beg ch-3.
- Continue in pattern for a total of 5 rows for a snug fit for standard cards. Adjust number of rows to preferred size.
Closure Loop
- Button/Closure:
- With current color, ch 15 (or adjust as needed for your button/flower size).
- Sl st to the same st where you began the chain to form a loop.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
Flower Button (Optional)
- Center:
- With white or any preferred color, create a magic ring.
- Sc 10 into ring. Sl st to first sc to join. Fasten off.
- Petals:
- Attach a contrasting petal color with a sl st to any sc.
- (Ch 2, 2 hdc in same st, 3 dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in next st) - petal made.
- Rep above sequence in each sc around for a total of 10 petals (or adjust as needed).
- Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
- Assembly:
- Stitch the flower securely onto the body of card holder corresponding to your loop placement.
Finishing
- Fold the rectangular card holder so the closure (with loop) is on top and base corner aligns.
- Using tapestry needle and yarn, sew the sides closed using whip stitch or mattress stitch, depending on your desired finish.
- Attach flower on the body at the center front, so the loop goes over it. If using a button, securely attach the button in place of flower.
- Weave in all ends neatly inside the cardholder.
Conclusion
This elegant and functional crochet card holder offers quick construction and a highly customizable finish. It makes a delightful return gift or handbag accessory, and can be completed in under an hour for experienced crocheters. The optional flower adds a playful touch, but may be substituted for a classic button for a more understated look.
Pattern Corrections & Tips
- Correction: If your stitch counts do not match up to allow the clusters and spaces, adjust by either adding or skipping a ch as you go; the important part is symmetry and function.
- Tip: Always count your stitches after each round to avoid overlaps or missed skips.
- Customization: Vary the number of foundation chains or rows for different-sized cards (business cards vs credit cards). For extra security, line the inside with fabric using a small stitch if desired.
- Stitch Definition: If new to working clusters or the magic ring, practice with scrap yarn before commencing main project.
- Maintenance: Gently hand wash and lay flat to dry to preserve the acrylic yarn's shape.
