Step 2: Row 1 - Forming V-Stitches
- Dc in the 5th ch from the hook.
- Skip 2 ch, in next ch work (dc, ch 1, dc) in same ch (V-stitch made).
- Repeat from * to end of chain:
- Skip 2 ch, V-stitch in next ch.
- You should have a total of 18 V-stitches (including the one at the beginning).
- Turn.
Step 3: Row 2 - Petal Base (Dark Color)
- Sl st into the 1st V-stitch sp.
- Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc).
- Hdc in the same sp.
- 3 dc in same sp.
- Hdc in same sp.
- Ch 3, sl st in same sp.
This completes 1 petal in the 1st V-stitch.
- Sl st into next V-stitch sp, repeat above sequence.
- Continue until you reach color change point, or as many petals as you want in the darkest color.
In video: 6 petals with medium color, refer below for gradation.
Step 4: Color Change and Medium Color Petals
- Once you have 6 petals, change to the medium color (salem/orange).
- Attach the new color in the next V-stitch.
- Follow the same steps as for the dark color:
- Sl st into V-stitch.
- Ch 3, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, ch 3, sl st in same sp.
- Repeat into the next 6 V-stitches (total 6 medium color petals).
Step 5: Lightest Color (Outer Petals)
- After completing medium color petals, change to lightest color (cream).
- Attach yarn in the next V-stitch sp.
- Sl st into V-stitch.
- Ch 3, 3 dc in same sp,
- 5 tr in same sp (for larger outer petals).
- Ch 3, sl st in same sp.
- Repeat in every remaining V-stitch space until end. (There will be 6 or more, depending on how many were done for previous colors.)
You can adjust the number of petals in each color for your unique gradation!
Step 6: Shaping the Rose
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
- Begin at the foundation edge; gently roll the strip into a spiral (the first petals form the bud/center, followed by the medium, then the lightest/outer petals forming the bloom).
- Using the yarn tail and tapestry needle, securely sew through the bottom edge of your rose to hold the spiral shape.
Conclusion
You have created a stunning multicolored rose-perfect for a variety of decorative uses! With its layered petals and gradation, it mimics the beauty of real blooms.
Pattern Corrections & Tips
- Correction: Ensure correct petal count per color according to your desired gradation. The original video uses 6 petals per shade; adjust as needed to fit the strip length.
- Tip 1: To create more petals per color, simply do fewer petals in the previous color before changing yarns.
- Tip 2: Use a sharp tapestry needle and sew through all layers at the base to prevent unraveling.
- Tip 3: For more fullness, make the starting chain longer and increase the number of V-stitches/petals.
Customization Ideas
- Try sparkly or variegated yarn for special effects.
- Attach leaves or beads for extra embellishment.
- Use thicker yarn and a larger hook for a huge statement rose!
Final Look
Your rose should have a beautiful spiral form, dense layered petals with dramatic color changes from dark center to pale edges. Enjoy using your rose as an appliqué, brooch, or gift embellishment.
